Fostering Personal Leadership in Adolescents: The Crucial Role of Developing an Internal Locus of Control
We’ve all been there. It’s the ups and downs of our teen years and some describe it as a roller-coaster ride. Adolescence has always been a critical developmental stage marked by profound physical, cognitive, and emotional changes and our young people are facing even greater challenges as a recent meta-analysis highlights a significant rise in mental health concerns among youth. Approximately 31% of children and adolescents globally experience depressive symptoms, 31% suffer from anxiety symptoms, and 42% face sleep disturbances. (Deng et al, 2023)
At this juncture, the locus of control, or an individual's belief about the degree of control they have over life events, becomes pivotal. It is a key factor. An internal locus of control reflects the belief that one's actions directly influence outcomes, while an external locus of control attributes outcomes to external forces. In other words, an internal locus of control is about taking personal responsibility for ones-self (“I’m responsible for my actions and feelings”) while an external locus of control looks to blame others, point to events or circumstances beyond one’s control (ie., “You made me do it!” “It’s your fault!”).
The global evidence base consistently highlights the substantial impact of an internal locus of control on various aspects of an individual's life. This article, the first in a series, delves into the importance of cultivating an internal locus of control in adolescents. Drawing from a range of studies and global trends, we explore the impact of locus of control on academic, health, life, and work outcomes. The article underscores the significance of evidence-based programs that capitalise on adolescent brain plasticity to instil lifelong habits of personal leadership.
Benefits of an Internal Locus of Control:
Numerous studies highlight the positive impact of an internal locus of control on various aspects of an adolescent's life. Academic success is one domain profoundly influenced by internal control beliefs. Students with an internal locus of control exhibit enhanced academic performance (Findley & Cooper, 1983). They are more likely to set realistic goals, engage in effective study habits, and persist in the face of academic challenges, ultimately leading to higher grades and academic success. Adolescents with an internal locus of control tend to exhibit greater motivation, resilience, and self-regulation, contributing to enhanced academic performance (Rotter, 1966).
Individuals with an internal locus of control tend to have better work outcomes also and experience higher levels of job satisfaction (Judge & Bono, 2001). They are more likely to perceive their efforts as directly influencing job outcomes, leading to increased motivation, engagement, and a sense of fulfillment in their professional lives. Internal locus of control is a key factor in achieving career goals. Those who believe in their capacity to shape their professional destinies are more likely to set ambitious career objectives, persevere in the face of setbacks, and take proactive steps toward career advancement. Research also suggests a positive correlation between internal locus of control and higher income levels. Individuals with an internal orientation tend to pursue education, training, and career opportunities more actively, contributing to increased earning potential over time.
Moreover, health outcomes are closely tied to one's locus of control. Internally-oriented individuals are more likely to adopt health-promoting behaviours, make informed choices, and seek preventive care, resulting in better overall well-being (Strudler Wallston & Wallston, 1978). As a correlate, those with an external locus of control have a shorter life expectancy of between 2 and 7 years and this effect for mortality is independent of socio-demographic and psychosocial factors (Infurna et al, 2011). A positive correlation exists between an internal locus of control and overall life satisfaction. Individuals who believe in their ability to influence events in their lives tend to experience a greater sense of control, autonomy, and overall life contentment. Individuals with an internal locus of control are more likely to set and achieve goals, cope effectively with stress, and display proactive behaviours (Nowicki & Strickland, 1973). Internal locus of control is associated with better mental health outcomes. Individuals with an internal orientation are more likely to adopt adaptive coping strategies, exhibit resilience in the face of challenges, and experience lower levels of stress, anxiety, and depression.
Global Trends in Locus of Control:
Recent global studies suggest a concerning trend towards an increasingly external locus of control in the population. Twenge et al (2004) found that young Americans increasingly believe their lives are controlled by outside forces rather than their own efforts, with scores becoming substantially more external in college student and child samples between 1960 and 2002. Factors such as the rise of technology, societal changes, and externalization of responsibility may contribute to this shift. This trend holds potential implications for future generations, impacting their ability to navigate challenges, make informed decisions, and achieve personal and societal goals (Twenge, 2017).
Understanding the causal factors behind the shift towards an external locus of control is crucial for developing effective intervention strategies. Socioeconomic disparities, chaotic and unpredictable childhood, educational systems, helicopter parenting and cultural influences may contribute to the development of an external locus of control. Addressing these root causes is essential for promoting a more balanced and internally-focused mindset among adolescents and may be a key strategy for evening the playing field for young people who are disadvantaged, marginalised and at-risk.
Interventions to Support an Adaptive Locus of Control:
So now we know the importance of developing an internal locus of control, how can this be achieved? The adolescent brain exhibits a high degree of plasticity, making it an opportune time for interventions aimed at fostering an internal locus of control. Evidence-based programs that emphasize personal responsibility, goal-setting, and problem-solving skills can capitalize on this neuroplasticity, creating lasting habits of personal leadership.
Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) Approaches
CBT is a widely used therapeutic approach that addresses maladaptive thought patterns. These interventions can include challenging and modifying external locus of control beliefs, encouraging individuals to recognize and change negative thought patterns (Beck, Rush, Shaw, & Emery, 1979). Attributional retraining is a specific cognitive-behavioural intervention that aims to shift individuals' attributions or explanations for events from external factors to internal factors. Attributional retraining involves modifying the way individuals attribute success or failure. Consequential thinking strategies help young people to hypothetically explore the outcomes of different decisions they could make in specific situations. By encouraging individuals to attribute outcomes to their own efforts, abilities, or strategies, this intervention promotes the development of an internal locus of control (Abramson, Seligman, & Teasdale, 1978).
Educational Programs
Structured programs that explicitly educate individuals about the concept of locus of control and provide tools for developing an internal locus of control have been shown to be effective. These programs often combine cognitive restructuring, goal-setting, and skill-building components (Nowicki & Duke, 1974). This also serves to respond to an increasingly sophisticated audience of young critical thinkers who are often compelled by the scientific evidence behind the tools and strategies they are being encouraged to adopt.
Goal-Setting and Planning
Encouraging individuals to set specific, achievable goals and create action plans fosters a sense of agency and personal responsibility. This intervention promotes an internal locus of control by emphasizing the role of individual actions in goal attainment and reducing ambiguity (Locke & Latham, 2002).
Strength-Based Approaches
Strength-based interventions focus on identifying and building upon individuals' strengths and capabilities. By emphasizing personal strengths, individuals are more likely to attribute success to their internal qualities, fostering an internal locus of control (Seligman & Csikszentmihalyi, 2000). Providing positive feedback and reinforcement for individual efforts and achievements helps reinforce the connection between one's actions and positive outcomes. This positively influences an individual's perception of control over their circumstances (Skinner, 1996).
Social Modelling and Coaching
Exposure to role models and mentors who exemplify an internal locus of control can have a positive impact on individuals. Observing others who attribute success to their efforts and actions, and who take responsibility for mistakes, can serve as a powerful learning experience (Bandura, 1977). Coaching young people to understand what is and isn’t in their control and rewarding responses that show accountability will support the development of a more internal locus of control.

The consistent findings across these domains underscore the far-reaching implications of an internal locus of control on various facets of an individual's life. This internal mindset appears to act as a catalyst for positive behaviours, attitudes, and outcomes, contributing to a more satisfying and successful life trajectory.
In conclusion, developing an internal locus of control in adolescents is critical for their overall well-being and future success. Recognising the global trend towards externalisation and exploring its causal factors is the first step in addressing this issue.
